Why NHS winter pressures could be the worst ever this year – and how we can help

As the seasons change and we begin the march into autumn, experts are warning the NHS could be heading into its worst ever winter.

With new strains of Covid already widely reported, some people are calling for mask wearing to be reintroduced in certain settings. A potential increase in infections coupled with the Government decision to reduce this winter’s Covid and flu immunisation programme has left experts concerned about capacity.

But it’s not too late to think about tackling the problems on the horizon.

Darwin Group is perfectly placed to be your partner of choice to increase capacity with fully compliant, innovative facilities that allow you to provide the very best patient experience possible.

From concept to completion, Darwin Group’s team of offsite healthcare construction experts work closely in collaboration with NHS teams to create the perfect solution. Whether it’s a new patient discharge lounge to free up vital bed spaces, a same day emergency care facility to ease overnight admission pressures, an ambulance receiving centre to provide extra capacity for handovers and additional support for emergency departments, or more wards and beds to cope with the surge in demand, Darwin Group can help.

Thanks to years of specialist offsite healthcare expertise combined with its own UK-based manufacturing hub, Darwin Group is flexible, agile and fast, delivering outstanding facilities to the NHS on time and on budget.

AMBULANCE RECEIVING CENTRE

Wolverhampton’s New Cross Hospital had its winter pressures eased thanks to a new Ambulance Receiving Centre (ARC) that was constructed by Darwin Group in just 18 days onsite.

The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust commissioned Darwin Group to design and install the ARC to improve the experience of hundreds of patients each week and allow paramedics to get back on the road sooner. With a total design and construction time of 46 days, the project made a fast impact.

SAME DAY EMERGENCY CARE

When Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust recognised an urgent need to develop an effective Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) provision to reduce pressure on inpatient beds, it turned to Darwin Group for help.

Darwin Group’s solution was a fast-track SDEC facility at Sandwell General Hospital to allows up to 30 people a day to avoid an overnight hospital stay.

ACUTE MEDICAL UNIT

To cope with rising patient numbers, Hereford County Hospital urgently required a new permanent Acute Medical Unit (AMU). Wye Valley NHS Trust instructed Darwin Group to create a fast-track 24-bed ward, complete with five four-bed bays, four single bedrooms, nurse bases, utility rooms, clinical disposal rooms, a pharmacy and associated ancillary spaces. Darwin Group provided a full turnkey service, acting as both principal designer and main contractor in a project that took just 12 weeks to build.
