From managing onsite construction to costing major projects, Rich Owen, head of construction for Darwin Group, holds a number of responsibilities.
Celebrating fourteen years with the business this year, we spoke to Rich to learn more about his role and his time with Darwin Group.
“I am responsible for the onsite construction of the superstructure,” said Rich.
“Day to day, I am also involved in project costings, financial forecasting, programming, and design. We also pick up the construction of linkways, builder’s works, and secondary steelwork installations.”
Working for the company for a number of years, Rich has witnessed first-hand the many significant changes in those 14 years, he continued, “I would say that one of the most significant changes has been our development from an education space provider to specialist healthcare space providers. Since migrating fully into the healthcare sector, Darwin Group has established itself as one of the industry leaders.”
Reflecting on his time so far, Rich gave some advice to the newest employees to join the business, currently navigating their careers in the company, he said, “Don’t be afraid of change! At Darwin Group, we often push the boundaries of construction through innovation.”
“There have been many proud moments during my 14 years at Darwin Group, but two moments stick out in my mind.
“Firstly, what Darwin Group achieved as a company during the COVID pandemic is simply astonishing. We delivered four large-scale, high-specification projects throughout the lockdown periods. What makes me most proud is how everyone involved worked as a team to deliver what would seem to many as unachievable.
“Secondly, the Portakabin acquisition. Darwin Group was not only recognised by a company of Portakabin’s stature, but we were also acquired by them. We must be doing something right.”
