Project: Two Cardiac Catheterisation Labs with 10 recovery bays
Client: Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
Location: Basingstoke

  • Solid concrete floors to exceed the continuous vibration floor multiplying factor HTM 08-01 requirements achieving less than 1 in the lab areas.
  • Unique two-storey barrel-vaulted roof housing a fully enclosed plant room.
  • Staff areas and storage rooms, plus a 48m linkway to existing hospital.
  • Passivhaus warm frame principles and sustainable MEPH strategy to achieve >25% reduction in CO2 against the target building.
  • 2.9m high suspended ceiling with structural supports co-ordinated and installed for the Phillips equipment.

The challenge

Due to strict planning requirements in relation to the barrel-vaulted roof, this required an innovative solution to ensure Modern Methods of construction were utilised. Considering the unique characteristics of the site and its topography, extensive enabling works were necessary for the construction of the building. Access complexity was increased due to the location of an emergency blue light route, which had to be temporarily diverted. Given the complex cardiac procedures carried out in the labs, clinicians expressed concerns around floor reverberation.

Our solution

The site’s topography meant significant enabling works were needed before the build started. By close cooperation with the Trust and all suppliers, the hospital and emergency route were kept fully and safely operational throughout.

Thanks to Darwin Group’s standard cast in situ concrete modular floor design for this type of facility, the floors exceeded the continuous vibration floor multiplying factor HTM 08-01 requirements achieving less than 1 in the lab areas. It also meets all other HTM 08-01 acoustic requirements
including airborne, impact and reverberation.

The build system uses warm frame principles and significantly surpasses the u-values to meet building regulation requirements whilst also achieving an excellent air permeability result due to the factory controlled working environment.
