Darwin Group launches On-Demand Ultraclean Operating Theatre to help clear NHS elective backlog

  • The UK’s leading healthcare estates specialist, Darwin Group, launches a hireable HBN and HTM compliant operating theatre, the first of its kind
  • The modular theatre could provide NHS trusts and private healthcare organisations with the additional surgical capacity needed to help clear the elective backlog, which currently stands at 7.46 million1 outstanding treatments

More NHS and private healthcare patients could receive life-changing operations sooner with the launch of the first hireable operating theatre by Darwin Group.

The new On-Demand Ultraclean Operating Theatre, formally launched at the Institute of Government & Public Policy’s (IGPP) fifth Annual Operating Theatres Show in London, is the first hireable modular operating theatre, that is HBN and HTM compliant.

Nick Dawe, Managing Director, at Darwin Group, said:

“Too many patients are waiting too long for life-changing surgeries, much to the frustration of them and hard-working staff. We know that the lack of appropriate theatre space is one of the biggest barriers to reducing the elective backlog.

“While temporary operating theatres have been available for some time, clinician feedback has told us that other solutions do not always provide the right environment for complex and intricate surgeries due to unstable floors. Our On-Demand Ultraclean Operating Theatre comes with the right grounding to perform even the most intricate of surgeries.”

“Six million patients are currently waiting for elective treatment. Orthopaedic and trauma elective care is carrying the largest backlog, with a total waiting list of 835,453 treatments and over 40% of patients waiting more than 18 weeks for treatment*. Not having appropriate theatre space is not the only barrier to treating more patients. Many NHS Trusts are experiencing challenges with having enough staff to deliver more elective care.”

Nick continued: “We have partnered with Medacs Healthcare so that our On-Demand Ultraclean Operating Theatre can also be provided with a full team of dedicated staff enabling them to be fully operational without impacting other services within a hospital. The theatres can also support NHS and private healthcare estates for as long as they need it, as an extension to existing estates or as an independent surgical hub.

“The Darwin Group On-Demand Ultraclean Operating Theatre is a complete solution for NHS trusts looking to reduce their elective backlog in a high-quality operating theatre. We believe that in partnership with the NHS we can reduce the elective backlog sooner.”

Martin Watts, Managing Director of Clinical Services at Medacs Healthcare:

“Medacs is proud to be working in partnership with the Darwin Group. Our clinical services division currently supports a wide range of NHS providers to deliver more patient care, managing inpatient and outpatient services across all specialities and building and managing dedicated workforces for all areas of NHS estates including medical and surgical wards, A&E, theatres and surgical hubs. Our staffing models are designed to deliver high-quality care to keep patients safe, optimise productivity and provide a truly flexible additional capacity solution, so workforces can be rapidly stood up or down to suit changing service needs.”

The On-Demand Ultraclean Operating Theatre can also support trusts and organisations needing to undertake maintenance and lifecycle programmes of work to their existing theatres, acting as a decant space allowing elective procedures to continue throughout any maintenance programme.
